Many people want to learn how to meditate. There are many different techniques that you can learn, but you need the right setting and circumstances in order for you meditation to be the most effective. Here are seven of the ways to prepare yourself for meditation.
One of the first tips for meditating is having the right location. You need to pick a spot in your house, office, or wherever that have the least amount of outside distractions. This can mean a quiet spare room, a space in your bedroom that you can set aside, or some people find that sitting quietly in their car can be the best place. You also need to make sure that no one disturbs you. This can simply mean telling your spouse or your kids that you need a few minutes of ‘time out’ time.
Tip number two is dealing with outside distraction are also going to bring you out of your meditative state. A lot of people use music or other sound recordings to help them weed out any outside influences. This is all good, but it is important that whatever you want to listen to is not distracting in itself. Your favorite rock band is going to be more distracting because you are going to be more focused on the song or the beat than meditating.
The third tip for meditation is time. You need time to not only meditate, but also get into the mood for it, (this leads to the fourth tip: deep breathing exercises, which we will come to in a moment). The right time to meditate also coincides with distractions, so many people either meditate first thing in the morning before the world wakes up, or just before going to bed after the kids are asleep, and the sounds of the world are starting to settle down. Either way works good, and as you get more and more in tune with your body and mind, the actual time you meditate will not matter as much.
The fourth of the most important tips for meditating is deep breathing. This is where you focus your energy on breathing. You inhale through your nose, hold it for a few seconds, and then let it out through your mouth. This actually does two things. It focuses your attention on the here and now, and allows an abundance of oxygen to enter your body. Both of these help to calm your nerves, let go of the tension you may have, and most of all, relax.
The fifth tip is that you will need to meditate wearing clothes that will let you relax. This means loose fitting, comfortable materials that aren’t going to bind or pinch. This also lets you get relaxed as well, allowing you to concentrate more on meditation than the waistband of your pants cutting into your skin, or that collar being a little too tight.
The sixth tip for getting in the mood for meditation is posture. Some say that you should sit cross-legged with your back straight, but some people just can’t hold that pose, or even get into this position. The idea is that you sit in a comfortable position, but not so much that you get sleepy, because meditation is a different state of mind than sleeping. Sitting as much upright as possible helps to not only align your body, but also your inner energy, so that it can easily flow up and down.
The seventh important tip is to keep doing your meditation, no matter what. If you are just starting out learning how to meditate, don’t expect instant results, and don’t beat yourself up if you don’t get it the first few times. Even the most powerful gurus didn’t start out this way, they started just like you. The important thing is that you keep at it, you will see results.
